This Reduced-Light Pistol course is part of our pistol training series for the student that wants to prepare themselves to operate in a low-light environment. This course will focus heavily on the use of the flashlight (handheld and weapon’s mounted lights) and other outside forms of illumination to effectively communicate, search, navigate, target identify, control, and engage potential threats in a reduced light environment.
Completion of our Intermediate Pistol course is required, or an equivalent course (USPSA / IDPA classification) before you attend the Reduced-Light Pistol course. The student MUST possess the knowledge and ability to physically demonstrate how to safely load, fire, and unload a pistol.
Students failing to meet and maintain our safety requirements and/or who cannot meet and immediately demonstrate the required minimum skills for this specific course may be removed from the training. Course Overview:
This course is taught by an NRA certified instructor with a real-world law enforcement background, experienced in reduced-light encounters who will provide hands-on training for the intermediate to advance pistol owners who seeks to develop, strengthen, and improve their reduced-light pistol techniques. This course is interactive, requiring mental preparation, physical awareness, and the student’s ability to apply reduced-light techniques that may include the use of ambient light to obtain an acceptable sight picture or identify potential threats.
You’ll discover the essentials of selecting the appropriate hand-held light source or weapon-mounted light and will gain practical skills on how to properly deploy them in a reduced-light environment.
There is ample opportunity in the classroom and range to achieve the desired practical knowledge in this casual and stress-free learning environment.
The course duration is approximately 4 hours, depending on class size and number of questions asked, which includes a 3-hour live fire practical session.
Course Outline:
· Overview of the universal firearms safety rules.
· Demonstrate administrative in-service loading and unloading pistol techniques.
· Overview of marksmanship fundamentals.
· Physiological effects of the human eye in light and reduced light environment.
· The principles of low light.
· Controlling movement and light discipline within confined spaces and structures.
· Elements of efficient movement and visual awareness with light sources.
· Reduced-light techniques with strong-hand and support-hand shooting.
· After-action course review.
Practical Skill Exercise:
· Perform a ready function check in reduced light environment.
· Utilizing light sources around objects and structures (live fire).
· Perform threat identification utilizing handheld light and weapon’s mounted light.
· Demonstrate search and control techniques. (classroom lab)
· Perform a strong-hand and support-hand low light techniques (live fire).
· Perform various reload drills (emergency, tactical, magazine exchange) with a firearm and
flashlight in hand.
Required Equipment: (Some items may be available to rent at the host location)
· Full-size, carry, compact or micro semi-automatic pistol or revolver. (Iron sight or Micro Optic
equipped)
--Students can rent a semi-auto pistol at location if rental firearms are available.
· Hearing protection (passive or electronic).
· Eye protection—wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses.
· Rigid Gun Belt (1.5” or wider)—contact us for additional questions.
· Outside the Waistband (OWB) Holster (strong-side only – no IWB, cross-draw,
appendix, etc.) (No Nylon, Cloth, or SERPA style holsters)—contact us for additional questions.
· Sturdy magazine pouch or pouches that can hold 2 magazines securely.
· At least 3 pistol magazines.
· Handheld flashlight.
· Weapon mounted light with suitable holster (optional)
· Knee pads (optional)
· Casual, comfortable clothing suitable for training in any weather.
· Closed toe shoes, footwear suitable for rapid movement and turning.
· 400 rounds of range approved ammunition.
